She Belongs to the Night Now

entity.

enter a garden

a vital force

where soil palpitates under foot

            rich

                        complex

                                                      product of elaborate decomposition

where mushrooms converse

sprouted in circles on the grass

                        threaded

                                    tangled

                                                                        with the underground sensorium

this space has entity

and she breathes

                        healing

                                                      shifting

with tentacular paths that run like veins

            trailing through flora

weaving under the draping leaves of a willow tree

                                                      whispering

breathe with her

her wisdom hums in the air

                  murmuring among the trees

                        listen

her vital power pulses

            in every root and stem

tune in

shifting dimensions.

an aged day releases a drowsy exhale

the uncanny veil spills through the air

falls in a sluggish cascade

draping over cobble and magnolia tree         reality              flickers

you are a child again

with a magic mind

standing veiled in a familiar unknown

intimate and uneasy

quiet air sweet with pollen and anticipation

a thick realm of vibrant intricacy

a day ages deeper

the veil seeps

where the magic mind piques

the weight of unease settles on the chest

and in the willow tree                         whispering

to the shadow of the magnolia

murmuring air rich with earth and wisdom

a spectral realm of shifting complexity

the garden sighs

she belongs to the night now

Poems by Kate Warren

She Belongs to the Night Now is a project rooted in memories. The construction of the garden represents letting the day pass in a garden as a child, and suddenly looking up and seeing the trees silhouetted against a heavy dusk sky. Seeing a place that felt so caring and safe transform into a place with this uncanny eeriness created a strange duality between healing and pain.

The aim of the work is to inspire exploration like you would have done as a child, both stunning and terrifying. Away from the restraints of modern-day cynicism or technology, to create a raw feeling and to achieve that startling duality between fear and beauty. Because discomfort has the power to heal. Within the garden there are plants that can kill you and those that can heal you.

The essence of the project is not what is seen, or heard, but what is felt. She Belongs to the Night Now aims to provoke a feeling personal to you. One that potentially resonates with the childish notion of distortion and terror driven interpretation, mixed with a deep appreciation for the beauty of the situation.

She Belongs to the Night Now is formed as a journey, a journey for the viewer to create themselves. The visual language is to reduce as much linear thinking and stripping the story of anything that is usually held onto, like colour or lushness.

As you get drawn through the garden, something will hopefully be drawn out of you.
